“It was around six PM yesterday at the Vero Beach Dog Park when I whistled for our dog,
Hattie who, in the four-acre park with thirty or so other dogs and as many humans, was unseen. She immediately came bounding up from 50 yards away where I later learned, she had been sitting on a bench with a friend, playing with a puppy. One whistle (distinctive); one dog present and accounted for, thanks to Harriet McCarthy.
Harriet did not teach me the whistle, my grandfather did; she did not teach me to use it for Hattie as I have used it for three dogs and two children. What she taught my wife and me was the patience to persevere with Hattie so she will come when there are other distractions present. It works up north in the woods or in farm fields as well as it works in the dog park or our small backyard in Vero Beach. Harriet, whom Hattie adores, was the difference between an immediate response and an ordeal of “begging” the dog to do the right thing.”

“Pachi loves Harriet McCarthy! She somehow knows what he is thinking and turns it into a lesson. He doesn’t even know he’s learning; he’s just having fun with Harriet.
Pachi is a quick study, but Harriet knows how important it is to train the owner and the pet. She had to work a little harder to train me.
(Maybe she should consider giving treats to the humans too!)
